THE BIG WHAT IF

(tool)

Brief description

When working with partners and other stakeholders, sometimes we only have a few seconds to capture people´s attention and secure their support. This tool helps us create a simple statement that invites others to envision the future with us.

Quick Guide

  • Use the template which contains the following statement: What if __________, so that ________________.
  • Think how to fill the first blank, which asks for your vision of a future when your concept has been realized (what if ________).
  • Think how to fill the second blank, which contains a statement of the impact your concept has on users, your organization, or even the world (so that ________).
  • Start by freewriting. Picture your concept in your mind´s eye.
  • Write whatever comes to mind for 3 minutes straight. Do not start editing until this time is complete.
  • Review your statement(s) and pull the best bits into a draft statement.
  • Get input from others before settling your final version.
  • Take a moment to evaluate if it is using these 3 criteria: Is it clear? Is it compelling? Is it consequential?
