PINOCCHIO TEST

(tool)

Brief description

Create a non-functional version of your solution and use your imagination to pretend it really works to see if and/or how you would use it.

Quick Guide

  • Identify and determine which issue you want to get more information from your solution (size, shape, thickness, accessibility, frequency of use).
  • Think of simple objects that you can use to pretend how you would use it.
  • Create a non-functional prototype of your solution. In the design take into account that you can use your imagination to complete the functionality and simulation of a working product.
  • Prepare your questions and indicators to evaluate and create a log to track interactions during the test.
  • Perform your and/or ask more users (2 to 3) to perform simulations of the experience with the non-functional prototype pretending or imagining that it is fully functional.
  • It can be a set number of interactions or use it for a longer period of time. Track interactions in the log.
  • If possible, observe and note user reactions and behavior with the non-functional prototype.
  • Once finished, invite users to share about their experience with the non-functional prototype. Use your established questions and indicators.
  • Use feedback to make modifications.

Benefits

  • It allows you to get feedback quickly and easily when pretending or imagining, without the need to invest a lot of resources.
  • It helps you identify parts of the experience that are outside your solution or are not yet resolved in your proposal.
  • It allows you to build a non-functional prototype very early in the design process.
  • It helps you build empathy for the user and what they might be going through.

Helpful Tips

  • Focus on simulating how you would use it rather than how you would build it.
  • Try aspects such as accessibility, size, weight or other essential physical characteristics where you can use your imagination to fill in the blanks.
  • You can perform the simulation from the beginning to the end of the experience or it can be at intermediate points in the experience.

Application

Additional Information

Inspirational questions you can ask yourself to bring to the record of experiences:

  • Function:
    • How would it work, what other functionality could it have?
  • Use:
    • How would I use it, what would I use it for, would I really use it, how often would I use it, do I remember to use it, what else would I use it for, how would I use it, how long would it take me to use it, how long would it take me to use it?
  • Features:
    • Is it accessible, is it practical, is the size ideal, is the weight ideal, is it fast?
